Former U.S. President Donald Trump is drawing hot attention from the cryptocurrency industry by hosting a dinner with cryptocurrency investors.
President Trump held a private evening gathering at the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia near Washington, D.C. on the 22nd (local time) with holders of the meme coin 'Trump Coin ($TRUMP)' associated with him. Over 200 people attended the event, and the invited guests were investors who hold a large amount of Trump Coin.
Justin Sun, the founder of TRON, who is well-known in the cryptocurrency industry, also attended the event and drew attention. He had previously invested approximately $75 million (about 10.3 billion won) in World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency financial company operated by the Trump family. However, he has also been investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for fraud allegations, leading to various interpretations of his event attendance.
This dinner was more than a simple evening gathering. Tickets have been provided to those holding the most Trump Coins since last month, and the top 25 investors were even invited to a White House tour and a reception with President Trump. According to Reuters, the total amount investors poured in to obtain dinner tickets reached $148 million (about 203.4 billion won).
At the event, President Trump stated, "I prioritize the country over business" and "While the Biden administration persecuted cryptocurrency innovators, we are inviting them to the United States." In a post on Truth Social just before the event, he also said, "The United States is leading in cryptocurrency and Bitcoin. We will continue to maintain this advantage."
However, the atmosphere outside the event was somewhat chilly. About 100 protesters outside the venue held signs with slogans like "Stop cryptocurrency corruption" and "Disclose the participant list".
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren strongly criticized the dinner, calling it a "corrupt feast using the presidential position to increase personal wealth". She claimed that President Trump is using cryptocurrency to pursue personal interests.
As cryptocurrency regulation has emerged as a major political issue, Trump's move has further clarified his cryptocurrency-friendly stance.
